These studies will increase our understanding of ocean-atmos- phere interactions and provide a better base for improved extended forecasts of weather over the Eastern North Pacific and North America. Better forecasts will improve planning for construction, farming, marine, and transportation activities. PACIFIC COD General Biology Geographical distribution. Pacific cod are found in continental shelf and upper continental slope waters of the North Pacific Ocean from off Port Arthur, China in the northern Yellow Sea, north around the North Pacific Rim, into the Bering Sea as far north as the Chukchi Sea, and south along the North America coast to Santa Monica Bay, California (Pinkas , Hart.

The Kuroshio is the strongest western boundary current in the Pacific Ocean. Consequently it has long been the focus of many scientific studies 1, it . El Niño and La Niña are the warm and cool phases of a recurring climate pattern across the tropical Pacific—the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, or “ENSO” for short. The pattern can shift back and forth irregularly every two to seven years, and each phase triggers predictable disruptions of temperature, precipitation, and winds.

Mechanical current meters are mostly based on counting the rotations of a propeller and are thus rotor current meters. A midth-century realization is the Ekman current meter which drops balls into a container to count the number of rotations. The Roberts radio current meter is a device mounted on a moored buoy and transmits its findings via radio to a servicing vessel. The visible satellite imagery is essentially a snapshot of what the satellite sees, unlike Infrared (IR) satellite imagery, which depicts the temperature of the clouds.

A COMPILATION OF MOORED CURRENT METER DATA FROM THE WESTERN NORTH PACIFIC, VOLUME XXXI, by Ellen Levy and Susan A. Tarbell WOODS HOLE OCEANOGRAPHIC INSTITUTION Woods Hole, Massachusetts August TECHNICAL REPORT Prepared for the Office of Naval Research under contract NC; NR Author: Ellen Levy, Susan A Tarbell.

Moored current meter data collected from the Bering Sea, Gulf of Alaska, and North Pacific Ocean in support of the Fisheries Oceanography Cooperative Investigations (FOCI) project, from 16 February to 25 May (NODC Accession ). Data from each current meter string are shown by means of pertinent statistics, real time plots of hourly values, progressive vector diagrams and rotary spectra.

The appendices describe the actual operation of the Aanderaa current meter and the methods used to process the data. Resource Type: Technical Report; Date Available: T Cited by: 6. The mean westward geostrophic currents of the NESC has been validated with moored current meter measurements at ° N, ° E in the far western tropical Pacific by: 1.

Current velocities and sea temperatures were obtained from two Vector Measuring Current Meters (VMCM) at 20 and 50 meters below the sea surface. This report discusses instrument performance, data quality, pre-and post-deployment calibrations, data telemetry, data processing procedures.

This report also presents the data in a variety of by: 1. Local steady circulation observed by moored current-meters at m depth in the western North Pacific Article (PDF Available) in Journal of Oceanography September with 3 Reads.

A unique local steady circulation is discovered from moored current-meter data obtained in – at m depth east of the Izu-Ogasawara Ridge, in mid-ocean of the western North Pacific.

Horizontal distribution of mean velocities for 1 year at 11 stations clearly shows a local anticyclonic circulation having a diameter of more than km and a mean rotating speed of about 2 cm s −1. [1] Bathymetric influences of the Emperor Seamounts (ESs) on the local and large‐scale flow fields in the subarctic North Pacific were investigated by analyzing data of directly measured velocity obtained using Argo floats, near‐surface buoys, and moored current meters.

The local influences were evident in notable deflections of two relatively strong (∼ m s −1) eastward flows over ESs.

The first compilation, consisting of data from instrument-years of current measurement has already been assembled and is being used to identify sites where current meter resources might best be deployed to fill key gaps.

~ITIS ~~. Western Boundary Current (DWBC) in the North Pacific. Transport of the DWBC for the South Pacific was quantified at two sites by moored current meter observations during the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) in the s.

For the North Pacific, however, mooring observations in Wake Island Passage were proposed but did not occur in WOCE. Strong ventilation due to surface outcrops in the open North Pacific affects only the top meters, and is directly tied to the wind-driven circulation.

Wind forcing and the wind-driven gyres The wind forcing for the North Pacific consists of westerlies at latitudes north. The North Pacific Index (NP index or NPI) is the area-weighted sea level pressure over the region 30°N°N, °E°W.

The NP index is defined to measure interannual to decadal variations in the atmospheric circulation.

Soreide, N.N. and M.J. McPhaden, Real-time distribution of data from the TAO moored buoy array in the tropical Pacific. In: Proceedings of the ECO-INFO Global Networks for Environmental Information, Lake Buena Vista, FL, November, Moored data also exist in the South Atlantic, Indian, and Southern Oceans, including a number of moorings with more than three instruments in the vertical.

All were analyzed, but the lateral coverage is even sparser than in the North Pacific, rendering any spatial patterns wholly dependent upon the accidents of coverage.

An analysis of data from moored current meters, however, led Wunsch () to the conclusion that the near-surface flow field in the interior ocean is primarily baroclinic and that barotropic contributions are becoming important only in the recirculation regime of boundary currents (high-latitude regions were not adequately sampled).

The profiler uses a battery-powered traction motor to climb up and down the mooring. Its sensors document water and current properties as the profiler climbs or descends.
